The town of Great Yarmouth is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 156 miles that would take around 3 hours by taxi via the M25, A12 and A14. It is a coastal town in Norfolk located at the mouth of the River Yare and has a population of 47,288 according to 2010 statistics.
The town is steeped in history from the Roman times with Caister Roman Fort and Burgh castle having been constructed there during their occupation. Evidence shows that the Saxon town that existed after was razed by Vikings. By the times of Edward I the town was an important port and there was a flourishing market selling livestock and fish such as Herring. Much of the old town was bombed during the second world war but some of the medieval wall, tudor, georgian and victorian buildings remain aswell as the maze of alleys and lanes known as 'The Rows' that help to give the town its distinctive character.
The town is a busy resort for visitors and tourists with sandy beaches, watersports and coastal walks to places such as Gorleston-on-Sea, Winterton-on-Sea and Hopton-on-Sea. The seafront is called the 'Golden Mile' with amusement rides and entertainment, and the victorian Britannia Pier.
